Foundation

The 2nd Basemen, Inc.  was organized exclusively for charitable and awareness purposes. Specifically, The 2nd Basemen, Inc. raises money to enrich the lives of both women and men diagnosed with breast cancer (and their families) by offering assistance to help them enjoy life and thrive despite their diagnosis and extensive and ongoing therapies. The purpose of raising that money is to provide assistance to women and men (and their families) living every day with breast cancer.

Our goals are:

  1. To provide financial assistance to women and men with breast cancer to help cover the shortfalls of insurance.
  2. To provide financial assistance to the immediate family of those with breast cancer to help cover the shortfall in family expenses.
  3. To provide financial assistance to allow for  enrichment in the lives of women and men (and their families) living with breast cancer, and
  4. To provide direct enrichment and support for women and men (and their families) living with breast cancer
To date, The 2nd Basemen, Inc. have been very successful in networking items and resources for women.  For example, Sandy, a 32-year old survivor, facing a serious cancer recurrence to her brain is an avid Boston Red Sox baseball fan.  By making a social media connection with a friend in our network of over 4,000 followers, we were connected to someone who was able to provide tickets to a baseball game, tour of Fenway Park, and a personal meeting with a baseball player.  This type of emotional enrichment can be as beneficial to a survivor as money.  As evidenced in this example, we are providing Sandy a day away, an escape from her battle with breast cancer.  It is likely that we will also continue to support her battle with other forms of enrichment and grants.

The following additional examples show how The 2nd Basemen, Inc. have also enriched the lives of women living with breast cancer in recent years:

  • In December 2011, we learned of a survivor in our network receiving the terrible news that her cancer had returned and was now metasticized to her lungs. Sadly, the expense of her new treatment was threatening to put her and her husband on the street by February. Through a generous donation, The 2nd Basemen, Inc was able to provide this 37 year old survivor the funds to fight her battle.
  • The 2nd Basemen Inc. worked with Vivas Las Chicas, a Florida non-profit, to arrange for a washer and dryer to be delivered to a survivor and her family. This survivor is living with metastatic breast cancer and was not mobile enough to travel to a laundromat.
  • Co-founder, Dusty Showers, drove a survivor’s children back and forth to school for a month after she was involved in a car accident and was left without transportation.
  • The 2nd Basemen Inc. connected a survivor’s husband to a dentist who performed necessary trans-formative oral surgery at a discounted rate. Our fundraising efforts along with a generous donation from The Westchase Foundation paid for this dental surgery.
  • After reading a young survivor’s blog post about how her chemotherapy regime was causing her to be unable to wear shoes due to the swelling and blisters, The 2nd Basemen Inc. was recruited by some of her friends to acquire a pair of expensive Christian Louboutins shoes.  Through The 2nd Basemen, Inc. network of friends, a generous donor came forward. For this survivor, diagnosed at age 21, the shoes truly enriched her life and allowed her to live in the moment and to feel as young as her 28 years.

Dusty Showers the 2nd Basemen is sincerely fighting breast cancer in unusual ways!
